Education Department meets School Principals to Discuss Bombay HC order regarding Schools Bag

MUMBAI: A day after the Bombay High Court asked the state government to reply if a panel’s recommendations to reduce weight of school bags are being implemented, the education department met school principals to take stock of the situation.

“We had called about 20 principals to understand what steps have been taken to reduce the weight of the school bags. We realise that almost 90% of the schools have taken at least some measures. The schools are also buying weighing machines for regular checks in schools,” said B B Chavan, deputy director of education, Mumbai division.

48179879Schools had up to November 30 to implement measures to reduce the weight of students’ bags. The prescribed weight of bags for class I to VIII is between 1.8kg and 3.4kg. However, until now the department has not collected data to check if the recommendations have worked. “We have called for reports from its zonal officers to submit reports after checking with schools by Monday. After that we will be able to say by how much has the weight reduced,” said Chavan.
