RAIPUR: A query by a tribal girl from a village in Sarguja district of Chhattisgarh to chief minister Raman Singh on reducing weight of schoolbags has stirred the state government into action. After successful intervention in Surguja, state government is all set to replicate the model in Raipur district collector OP Choudhary recently ordered all private and government schools to take initiatives reduce weight of school bags as it was causing severe health ailments to the students.Talking to TOI, Choudhary said, “After lots of research and referring nutritional charts, we concluded that schools should ensure that a student of nursery doesn’t have to carry bag exceeding one kilogram while for student of Class 1-V, it has to be three kilograms while not more than four kilograms for Class VI-VIII. This has to be mandatorily followed.”With private schools resisting and expressing inability over collector’s orders to reduce weight of heavy bags for students, a workshop with experts and doctors is scheduled on September 14 for 200 school principals to suggest ways how to reduce weight of schoolbags.

Circular issued by Choudhary said while Prime Minister and chief minister both have expressed concern over students carrying heavy schoolbags, Dr Akhilesh Dubey and Dr Anand Jain of Raipur have also advocated the cause saying heavy bags would cause serious health hazard in children.
